FSA announces results of County Committee Election

Results of this year’s election for a vacant seat on the Morgan County Farm Service Agency (FSA) Committee were announced by Susan L. Minor, County Executive Director of the Morgan County FSA.

Gerry Dale Holmes of Falkville was reelected to represent farmers in the communities of Morgan City, Union Hill, Florette, Ryan, Eva, Falkville, Gandy’s Cove and Brewer communities. He assumed his committee duties on Jan. 1, 2013, said Minor. Holmes will serve a three-year term.

Shannon T. Brown came in second, Marilyn Champion came in third and Rita A Oden-Harvell came in fourth, respectively, in the election, which was held between Nov. 4 and Dec. 5, 2012. County office employees tabulated election results on Dec. 5, 2012.

First and second alternates serve, respectively, in the absence of the elected committee member for a three-year term. They may also be called upon to fill the unexpired term of the committee member.

County FSA committee elections are held annually, according to Minor. Candidates are nominated by local farmers and ranchers, must live in the county or local administrative area they will represent, and must be eligible to vote in the county election.

Duties of county committee members include:

• informing farmers of the purpose and provisions of FSA programs

• keeping the state FSA committee informed of local administrative area conditions

• recommending needed changes in farm programs

• participating in county meetings as necessary

• performing other duties as assigned by the state FSA committee

Gerry Dale Holmes will join R. Mark Byrd and Kenneth Anders. The committee members held their organizational meeting on Dec. 5, 2012 at 8:30 a.m. at the local FSA Office at 3120 Highway 36 W Suite A, Hartselle, Ala. Meetings are open to the public. The county committee chairperson and vice chairperson was selected at this meeting. R. Mark Byrd will serve as chairperson, and Kenneth Anders will serve as vice chairperson. The Morgan FSA County Committee meetings are held on the 2nd Tuesday every third month at 8:30 a.m., at the local FSA office.
