Shoppers looking to save money as they get ready for back to school will want to take advantage of the upcoming sales tax holiday.
Hartselle is joining in the state holiday, set for Aug. 7-9. The state’s 4 percent sales tax will be repealed for the weekend, along with Hartselle’s 3 percent assessment and Morgan County’s 1 percent.
Sales tax exempt items include clothing priced at $100 or less; school supplies valued at $50 or less; books that cost $30 or less; and computers or computer equipment, including software, valued at $750 or less. The cost limit is per individual item, not total purchase cost.

State officials are hoping this year’s sales tax holiday will boost retail sales decimated by shoppers leery of spending in the middle of hard economic times. Some states, such as Florida, and counties, such as Jefferson County, have opted against participating in sales tax holidays this year.
Mississippi, Tennessee and Georgia are participating this year.
