Commission OKs loan for new industry

By By Clif Knight, Hartselle Enquirer
The Morgan County Commission is assisting Eva is its efforts to land a new industry.
The commission agreed unanimously at an adjourned meeting April 28 to support the Rural Morgan County Industrial Development Board in making a loan to recruit a new industry for the town of Eva.
The commission authorized the industrial board to withdraw $300,000 from a revolving fund as a loan to Tony Estes for the development of a shavings mill on a 10-acre tract of land in the Eva Industrial Park. The new company proposes to produce wood shavings for the poultry growers industry.
The loan will be for 10 years at 3 percent interest and will be repaid in monthly installments. It will be used to construct and equip a manufacturing facility and meet other necessary expenses in support of the project.
In other business,
District Judge Shelly Slate Waters met with the commissioners to discuss the hiring of a chief probation officer to replace Harry Williams who is retiring.
She expressed concern about finding someone with a law degree to fill the position at the current salary and requested a salary deviation from county guidelines.
She requested a salary range of $56,000 to $63,0000.
The commissioners agreed for her to post and advertise the position at the figures she requested but asked her to come back to them with a salary request after the interviewing process is completed.
In another personnel matter, David Hannah, director of Data Processing, was denied a request to approve a network administrator position for his department. However, the commissioners indicated they would reconsider the request during budget hearings starting in July.
The commission acted on other matters as follows:
