Dec. 18, 1958-Robert C. Francis, Jr., Robert D. Wright, and Joe M. Thompson were degree recipients during graduation ceremonies at Auburn this afternoon. Francis majored in civil engineering and Wright in electrical. Thompson’s degree was in textile management.
Dec. 18, 1958-MCHS’s cagers won again tonight, defeating Falkville at home by the resounding score of 80-33. Jerry Atkins paced the Tigers with 22 points.
Dec. 19, 1958-Dr. and Mrs. Roland King and little daughter moved today into the home they recently purchased from the M. M. Pattersons on Cedar Street. Dr. King sold his home on Barkley Street to Lista Martin. At the same time Mr. and Mrs. John Guier moved from their home on the BeeLine Highway to the Burleson house on East Main.
Dec. 19, 1958-Margie Ann Long entertained a group of school friends tonight with a Christmas party at her home.
Dec. 19, 1958-The MCHS basketball Tigers beat the Decatur Red Raiders 60-53 tonight in another game played before about 2,000 fans. Lothian Smallwood was Hartselle’s leading scorer with 19 points. Following Smallwood were Jerry Atkins (16) and Scotty Maples (13).
Dec. 20, 1958-Another couple joined the “50 Club” today. Mr. and Mrs. Fred M. Speake are observing their golden wedding anniversary. The quiet celebration was held at the home of their daughter, Anne (Mrs. T. E. Kimbrough Jr.). Family members present in addition to the Kimbroughs were Mr. and Mrs. Otto Speake of Florence; and Mr. and Mrs. Lamar Speake, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Speake, and Mr. and Mrs. Van (Gladys) Glasscock of Hartselle. S. Sgt. and Mrs. Herschel Speake of Del Rio, Tex., were the only family members unable to attend.
Dec. 20, 1958-Auburn beat Alabama 79-60 to win the Birmingham Classic basketball championship tonight. The Tigers have now won 16 straight games; the longest major college win streak in the nation. Rex Frederick with 22 points was Auburn’s leading scorer while his cousin, Clyde Frederick, led Bama with 17 points.
Dec. 20, 1958-The Falkville Lions Club held another turkey shoot at the football field this morning. Once again all proceeds go to sight conservation efforts.
Dec. 21, 1958-Dr. J. T. Burch, Morgan County tax assessor, reminds the public that any change in real estate must be reported to his office before January 1.
Dec. 22, 1958-Max Merrill, an MCHS graduate, has been accepted to and will enter the UA School of Dentistry.
Dec. 23, 1958-Carolyn McCutcheon is a new member of the Winnetaska Club at Anderson (Ind.) College, a Church of God liberal arts institution. D. C. Holloway, also from Hartselle, was tapped for membership in the Booster Club.
Dec. 24, 1958-Practically every office in the Morgan County courthouse was closed today in observance of Christmas Eve. They will remain shut down until Monday the 29th.
Dec. 24, 1958-Most local groceries are offering coffee to go with the Christmas feast for 59 cents a pound. A year ago the price was 73 cents.
Dec. 24, 1958—Morgan Countians were grieving over the sudden passing of their beloved sheriff, Jimmie Collier, who suffered a fatal heart attack while on Christmas Eve duty this afternoon. He was in the process of taking into custody two drunks who were disturbing the holiday peace.
