Nov. 27, 1958-Thanksgiving Day deer hunting was allowable today in Tuscaloosa, Bibb, Hale, Jefferson, Perry, and Walker counties and several local men took advantage of it.
Nov. 27, 1958-Larry Roberts of Marion Military Institute is the guest of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Guy Roberts, during the Thanksgiving holidays.
Nov. 27, 1958-Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Stoner of Sylacauga are spending Thanksgiving with their son Richard, Mrs. Stoner, and Kay.
Nov. 28, 1958-Mrs. Roman T. Puckett celebrated her 89th birthday today.
Nov. 29, 1958-Auburn beat Alabama 14-8 this afternoon in Birmingham. The victor was in doubt until the final 10 seconds of the game. Auburn hasn’t been defeated in 24 games, although it was tied by Georgia Tech six weeks ago. Bama’s touchdown was scored by Marlin Dyess. Jimmy Pettus and Jimmy Reynolds were responsible for Auburn’s winning TDs. Auburn ends its season with a 9-0-1 record while the Tide, rebuilding under the leadership of Coach Bear Bryant, finishes 5-4-1.
Nov. 30, 1958-Earl Payne has about completed the six-room home he has been constructing at Wheeler Place. Orville Tanner has several projects under way in his new Tanner Heights subdivision.
Dec. 1, 1958-Prominent Hartselle merchant George K. Stephenson suffered a fatal heart attack this morning. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at Decatur First Baptist where his son, Rev. W. K. (Billy) Stephenson, is the pastor. Pallbearers will be John Lyle, Lelton Lawrence, Phil Orr, R. S. Hicks, Jack Stone, Frank Smith, Guy Roberts, and W. E. Eason.
Dec. 1, 1958-Ten men were arrested over the weekend by Sheriff Jimmie Collier and his deputies, each for public drunkenness.
Dec. 2, 1958-Jackie Lee Prince, Hartselle 3, and Sim Parker Garner, Falkville 2, went to Montgomery today for their pre-induction Army physicals. They are among 22 men from this area included in the Dec. draft call.
Dec. 2, 1958-A speaker at a meeting for area public school teachers tonight urged them by both precept and example to incorporate the Bible into their daily lessons.
Dec. 2, 1958-Auburn beat Jacksonville State in basketball tonight by a score of 111-54. This was the most points the Tigers had ever scored in a game. Alabama had defeated the same team by an 80-40 score the preceding night.
Dec. 3, 1958-The Hartselle Rotary Club paid tribute at its meeting today to the 34 original members of the club.
Four of the charter members are still active-J. E. Peck, W. T. Stewart, J. E. Stone, and M. H. Broom.
Dec. 3, 1958-Alabama head football Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant and assistant coach Gene Stallings were in the area today talking to top Crimson Tide prospects. In a talk he gave in Decatur, Bryant asserted his belief that, “Those who are most successful are always able to reach down and give just a little something extra.” He also identified the six qualities an individual needs in order to amount to something: (1) self-discipline, (2) sacrifice, (3) willingness to work, (4) getting back up after being knocked down, (5) teamwork, and, most important, (6) not being embarrassed to pray.
