Drug task force receives state grant

By Staff
Gov. Bob Riley has awarded an $84,226 grant to assist the Morgan County Commission in the fight against illegal drugs in the county.
The grant will help continue the work of the Morgan County Narcotics and Violent Crimes Task Force. The unit investigates drug-related crimes and arrests suspects caught using, selling or trafficking illegal drugs.
The task force is a joint effort of the Morgan County Sheriff’s Department, the district attorney’s office and the Hartselle Police Department. It shares intelligence information with member agencies to help with case preparation and works with law enforcement groups in the surrounding area.
Task force officials say that in recent years, methamphetamine has become the most prevalent drug in the county. To combat the drug’s distribution, the task force conducts raids on methamphetamine labs and works to disrupt and dismantle drug trafficking groups bringing methamphetamine and other drugs into the county.
Local matching funds of $84,226 have been committed to the task force.
