Nail, Stanley win Four Ball title

Suzanne Stanley of Decatur and Hartselle’s Heather Nail dominated the field in the fifth annual Women’s State Four Ball Championship at Turtle Point Yacht & Country Club in Killen shooting scores of 66-64-67–197, to finish 19-under-par.

They led by seven shots starting Friday’s final round over Birmingham’s Kathy Hartwiger and McCalla’s Leah Green and ended up winning by seven from them as Hartwiger and Green combined for rounds of 70-67-67–204.

Lucie King and Amy McGohon, both from Tuscaloosa, finished third after shooting 71-69-65–205.

But the day and championship belonged to former Mississippi State golfer Stanley and high schooler Nail, who never made a bogey in 54 holes of golf.

Stanley graduated from Mississippi State in 2010 and has kept playing golf as an amateur. She is 25 and a pharmaceutical sales rep.

“I can’t tell you how proud we are to win a state championship and to make no bogeys (and 19 birdies) is pretty special,” Stanley said.

“We played so solid right from the start and I set us birdie goals (to try to attain) for every nine holes and we mostly surpassed them, which was great and kept us focused on each hole.”

Nail, 17, is home schooled.

“I grew up knowing who Suzanne was. She was well known around Decatur and Hartselle. My aunt and uncle know her and her family rally well and I decided to ask her if she would like to play together. We are both glad that I did.”

Nail just started home schooling, previously attending Hartselle High School, whom she won the State 5A title for as a 10th grader, and the team has won four state titles in a row.

She desires to play college golf in two years and is interested in agronomy and turf management. Her father owns Quail Creek Golf Course in Hartselle and she also plays at Burningtree and Point Mallard, both in Decatur.

“This was so much fun. It was nice to have a big lead (in the final round) and not have to sweat it. Suzanne kept reading the putts, and I did my best to keep making them.”
