A look back to Aug. 29-Sept. 4, 1962

Aug. 29, 1962 – Gov.-nominate George Wallace and Dr. Wernher von Braun met today. Wallace said, “I’ve made so many campaign promises that I don’t know if I can keep them all.” Dr. von Braun said: “That’s what we do in NASA. We promise them the moon, Venus, and Mars.”

Aug. 29, 1962 – MCHS student Pat Giles has entered the Miss Labor Day pageant to be held in Decatur on Monday. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Giles.

Aug. 29, 1962 – Mr. and Mrs. David Rosenau and daughter, Jill, have returned to Athens following a two-months tour of Europe. (The late Mrs. Jill Rosenau Hicks later married one of Hartselle’s most outstanding young men, Bobby Ray Hicks.)

Aug. 30, 1962 – Gov. John Patterson has named a committee consisting of 20 prominent citizens to determine if it would be feasible to bring the battleship Alabama to Mobile Harbor. It would be a permanent memorial to the men and women who have given their lives for their country. If the state can’t raise the needed funds it will be scrapped by the Navy.

Aug. 30, 1962 – Morgan County retired teachers had a picnic at Delano Park in Decatur today. Mrs. L. L. Gilchrist, retired home ec teacher at MCHS, had charge of the program.

Aug. 31, 1962 – Morgan County schools began the fall term with a half-day session today. The first full day will be Tuesday, the day after Labor Day. A total of 8,130 students are enrolled. More students undoubtedly will enroll later, after their family cotton crop is harvested. Nine new classrooms are in use for the first time at MCHS, considerably relieving previous overcrowding.

Aug. 31, 1962 – The body of Peter Wallace, 19, son of TV personality Mike Wallace, was found at the bottom of a ravine near Corinth, Greece, today. He had been taking a hiking trip on seldom used paths leading to a monastery. (Mike Wallace died on April 7, 2012, at 93.)

Sept. 1, 1962 – The Auburn Tigers began fall football practice today. Coach Shug Jordan has 64 candidates for starting positions. The leading candidate for the critical QB position is Jimmy Sidle.

Sept. 1, 1962 – Hartselle’s new two-cent sales tax went into effect today. According to City Ordinance 423, 75 percent of the proceeds will go to Hartselle schools while the remainder will go to the municipal general fund.

Sept. 1, 1962 – The Morgan County Gun Club began its Tennessee Valley open skeet tournament today at the club range atop Burleson Mountain. Hartselle’s Dr. Harold Blanton is the founder of the club.

Sept. 1, 1962 – Wayne Tapscott, Hartselle 3, was well enough to go home from the hospital today.

Sept. 2, 1962 – There was a get-together of the T. B. Strickland, Murray Rowe, and Tom Drinkard families today at the Strickland home in Falkville.

Sept. 2, 1962 – Mrs. Jo Chandler of Hartselle is taking a public stand against one-party Democratic rule in Alabama. She urges her fellow-citizens to put the interest of country above that of party. Mrs. Chandler resides at 409 Rock Street.

Sept. 3, 1962 – The Kayo gas station at Flint was robbed of $70 by two men with guns early this morning. Police from Hartselle, Decatur, and the Morgan County sheriff’s department are investigating but they have no suspects.

Sept. 3, 1962 – Tonight a little before 9 the last swimmer got out of the Hartselle pool. The facility will be closed until the end of school next spring.

Sept. 4, 1962 – The Morgan County Board of Registrars office at the courthouse is registering citizens 21 and over today who have previously paid their poll taxes and are eligible to vote (after demonstrating their literacy).

Sept. 4, 1962 – A still with a one thousand-gallon capacity was destroyed by sheriff’s deputies near Danville today.
