Municipalities to participate in tax holiday

Municipalities in Morgan County are joining the state’s inaugural Severe Weather Preparedness Tax Holiday July 6-8 to help residents ready themselves for a potential natural disaster.

The Alabama Legislature passed the tax holiday in the 2012 Legislative Session.

The sales tax holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. on the first Friday in July 2012 and ends at midnight the following Sunday. For each year thereafter, the sales tax holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. on the last Friday in February and ends at twelve midnight the following Sunday.

Any portable generator and power cords, which are used to provide light or communications or preserve food in the event of a power outage, are exempt up to $1,000.

The following is a list of items exempt from taxes under $60:

AAA-cell batteries

AA-cell batteries

C-cell batteries

D-cell batteries

6-volt batteries

9-volt batteries

Cellular phone battery

Cellular phone charger

Portable self-powered

Battery-powered radio, two-way radio, weather-band radio or NOAA weather radio

Portable self-powered light source, including battery- powered flashlights, lanterns or emergency glow sticks

Tarpaulin

Plastic sheeting

Plastic drop cloths

Other flexible, waterproof sheeting

Ground anchor system, such as bungee cords or rope, or tie-down kit

Duct tape

Plywood, window film or other materials specifically designed to protect window coverings

Non-electric food storage cooler or water storage container

Non-electric can opener

Artificial ice

Blue ice

Ice packs

Reusable ice

Self-contained first aid kit

Fire extinguisher

Smoke detector

Carbon monoxide detector

Gas or Diesel fuel tank or container

Items not exempt under $60 are coin batteries, automobile batteries and boat batteries.
