HU implements water conservation plan

Decatur Utilities has issued a water conservation advisory targeting customers who are using irrigation systems for outdoor watering, according to Hartselle Utilities General Manager Ferrell Vest.

Vest said he was notified of the advisory this morning by DU General Manager Ray Harding. The guidance is for even numbered houses to water only on even numbered days and odd numbered houses to water on odd numbered days. In addition, it was suggested that watering be done during non-peak demand hours, 9 p.m. to 4 a.m.

“I told him (Harding) HU will follow DU’s guidance so there should be no confusion between the different systems,” Vest said.

Falkville customers are expected to be included under the advisory since Falkville purchases water from Hartselle, a customer of Decatur Utilities.

“We’re seeing a significant increase in water demand due to outdoor watering,” Vest said on Thursday. “At the same time, we’re experiencing very low volumes of wastewater at the wastewater treatment plant.”

Lawn grass and plants are suffering for the lack of moisture, as the result of near-record high temperatures and no significant rainfall since June 3.
