The City of Hartselle will not be annexing any property until after the Nov. 6 wet/dry referendum.

The Hartselle City Council declared a moratorium on annexations until that time. Mayor Dwight Tankersley said the city’s policy has been to not expand the city limits within 60 days of an election.

Initially, the city was only going to enforce the moratorium through the municipal elections in August and October. However, because of the referendum, Tankersley recommended that the moratorium be in place until after the wet/dry issue has been decided.

In other business, the council:

• officially called for a wet/dry referendum on Nov. 6. City attorney Larry Madison said the council had to call for the election since a petition requesting the vote was turned into City Clerk Rita Lee and had signatures from at least 717 registered Hartselle voters, the minimum number needed by law.

• approved budget adjustments of $5,146.19 to pay for 1 3/4-inch foam fire hose and $300 to purchase uniforms for new department employee Thomas Churchey.

• adjusted the public works budget by $26,000 to purchase new recycling containers.

• granted a budget adjustment of $1,500 to pay for unexpected repairs at the public library.

• established a new account to for new court fees, which go into effect in July.

• authorized sales tax refunds of $7,167.83 and $2,051.64 for ALTEC Industries, Inc.
