Hartselle Drama to present ‘Godspell’ this weekend

Hartselle Drama will present the Steven Schwartz musical “Godspell” Oct. 28 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

“Godspell,” based on the Gospel of Matthew, will take you on a journey through parables that tell the story of Christ. This production focuses on themes of friendship, loyalty and love. The cast will present ‘Godspell’ at the Trumbauer Regional Theatre competition Nov. 4.

Starring in the lead roles are Cooper Reid Estep as Jesus and Brayden Barrier as John the Baptist/Judas.

Originally conceived by John-Michael Tebelak with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, “Godspell” showcases a small group of individuals who assist Jesus Christ in conveying parables using a wide array of games, storytelling techniques and plenty of humor. The musical incorporates an eclectic blend of songs, ranging from pop to vaudeville, as it brings the story of Jesus’ life to vividly dance across the stage. The production poignantly culminates in the Last Supper and the Crucifixion, where Jesus’ messages of kindness, tolerance and love come to life in a vibrant and unforgettable way.

What makes this show truly unique is that it features only two named characters: Jesus (played by Estep) and Judas (portrayed by Barrier.) The remaining cast members are ensemble performers, playing themselves as they act out the stories that unfold throughout the production.

The ensemble cast includes Clara Bass, Kennedy Cataline, Lily Collins, Emma Gregory, Phoenix Hughes, Brady Long, Lucas McMinemon, Lilly Norris, Jack Turner, Laura Lundy, Alivia Wiley, Jackson Hensley and CJ Janzig.

Tickets cost $10 and can be purchased through My School Bucks.
