You might have noticed a sweet new business has opened up right on Main Street under the striped awning by the railroad tracks. Sugar Mama’s Bakery opened in early November and is owned by Lindsay Kubica.

Lindsay is not a stranger to running a business. In the past she had a well-known boutique, called The Olive Co. The retail shop was originally located in the McClanahan Hardware building, a hardware store run by her grandparents. A few years later, after spending some time in Hawaii with her husband, Adam, she reopened The Olive Co. on the corner of Main and Railroad – but while Lindsay had a history in retail, in her heart she always wanted to have a little bakery.

Lindsay has always loved to cook and bake. She said one of her fondest memories from childhood is of making clover rolls with her grandmother. She dreamed of taking that passion and turning it into a business, but she was hesitant.

At her grand opening for the retail shop in the Main Street location, someone made the comment that the event room upstairs would make a great place for a little restaurant or coffee shop. That was it.

Lindsay said that chance visitor had no idea how much her heart was yearning to do just that. Ever since, her dream of starting her own bakery was all she could think about. One day, she was talking with Adam about it, and his response to her was “Just do it!” So she decided to set aside her nerves and go about realizing her dream.

Sugar Mama’s offers fresh baked goods and treats, such as cinnamon rolls, fudge, brownies and cookies. The most popular menu item, however, seems to be the scones. 

There is a DIY coffee and tea bar where you can get a cup of fresh coffee and add your favorite flavorings, if you like. At lunchtime you could stop in for a soup and sandwich, chicken salad or pimento cheese, pasta salad or other midday fare.

One of the lovely touches in the bakery is the children’s nook, The Kids’ Cafe. It creates a welcoming environment for parents of young children, offering a place for the children to play while the adults enjoy their chat. Sugar Mama’s even offers events for children, like a Saturday cookie station.

In addition to baked goods and treats, Sugar Mama’s offers something that surprised Lindsay with its popularity – “take and bake” casseroles. Lindsay says doing the casseroles was a bit of a whim. She thought she might be able to sell a couple of them, so the week she opened the bakery, she made 17 casseroles to go. Twelve of them sold the very first day. She now offers three varieties of casseroles to choose from: poulet, chicken spaghetti and beef enchilada, with more in the works.

Stop in to Sugar Mama’s and grab a scone and coffee or a pan of poulet to take home to the family. The bakery is located at 101 Railroad St. SW.
