Open your eyes to new life

By Todd Barrier of Hartselle Church of Christ

In the movie “The Blind Side,” we see the story of a young man who is given a chance at life he hadn’t even imagined before.

The movie is about the life of Michael Oher, a former Ole Miss Football player who went on to play in the NFL. The movie gets its name from the position he played on the offensive line, where he protected the quarterback’s “blindside.”

Sometimes in our life as a Christian, we create our own spiritual blindside, where we ignore our relationship with God because we’ve blinded ourselves to the sin in our lives. In Romans 12:1-2, the Bible teaches us not to conform to this world; however, that’s exactly what we do. We blind ourselves to the dangers of going against God’s Word because we have conformed and become just like everyone else. There has been no change in our lives as it relates to God.

At some point, because we are living life from the blindside, we become exactly what the Bible tells us to watch out for. We become lovers of ourselves, lovers of money, proud, boastful, unthankful and many other things the Bible warns against. Just like Michael Oher, we need to have something or someone come into our lives and help open our eyes to a whole new life.

On the road to Damascus, Paul was blinded by the light but was able to see clearly because of it. God will help protect us from spiritual blindness if we seek Him!

Are you being blinded by the world, or are you seeking God to protect your blindside?
