Library hosts Hartselle Play and Learn School for story time

The William Bradford Huie Library hosted the Hartselle First Baptist Church Play and Learn School for a story time Wednesday. The three year old classes enjoyed a story and activities that included building a tower and making lego imprints in playdough.

Michelle Blaylock is the librarian at the William Bradford Huie Library, and said the story time is a way for the kids to have fun and learn more about the library. “I am trying to work on developing skills. Eventually we will learn library skills like how to find books and to take care of them,” Blaylock said.

The class visits once a month, and have been coming for over a year now. “It started out by one teachers wanting to come for a holiday special we were having then they started coming monthly. They are so good. I love seeing this class come,” Blaylock said.

According to Blaylock, the story times are the doorway to getting the kids interested in the library later in life. “Children learn so quickly at this age. The more we give them, the more they learn. This is where we develop that interest,” Blaylock said.

The students were able to pick out a book to take home with them after the activities. Blaylock said she hopes the program will engage the kids and show them the different resources the library has to offer.

In addition to learning about the library, the kids also explore different subjects through the stories that they read. Blaylock said that it helps introduce kids to not only the library, but the world around them. “I want to expand those horizons. The more we can offer them the better they will be,” she said.
