Sales tax holiday slated for this weekend

The thirteenth annual Alabama back-to-school sales tax holiday will take place this weekend. The holiday will offer exemptions for select school related items. The holiday will kick-off at 12:01 a.m. Friday and will end at midnight Sunday.

Hartselle is among the municipalities taking part in the holiday, meaning that supplies purchased in Hartselle will also be exempt from local sales tax. The items qualifying for the exemptions include clothing, computers and school supplies. Select books are also included in the exemptions.

Clothing items that qualify for the exemptions must be $100 or less per article of clothing. The exemptions does not include sporting equipment, protective equipment or accessories such as purses or jewelry.

Computers, software and supplies must be under $750 per single purchase. In addition to computers and laptops, the exemptions include printer supplies, printers, personal digital assistants, and storage devices.

Supplies qualifying for the exemption are those that are $50 or less per item, and include things such as binders, glue, book bags, erasers and more. Bound books are also included in the exempt list. The exemption does not include newspapers, magazines or other periodicals.

An extensive list of exempt items can be found at: https://revenue.alabama.gov/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/STHolidayQuickRefSheet18.pdf
