Brewer girls come up short in two-overtime thriller

JACKSONVILLE – It took 40 minutes to decide the second semifinal of the 6A varsity girls Northeast Regional, as defending state champion Homewood outlasted Brewer 63-62 in two overtimes to advance to Tuesday’s regional final.

Shyan Flack – a Montevallo signee – made the most of her final game in a Patriot uniform. Flack totaled a team-high 24 points including a perfect 6-6 mark from the free throw line. McCarley Northway finished with 16 and Evaiah Burrows scored 12.

Brewer overcame a 24-20 halftime deficit by outscoring Homewood in both the third and fourth quarters. The Lady Patriots were on the verge of closing the game out when a putback by Homewood’s Kassidy Crawford forced the first extra period.

Head coach Ron Smith’s team surged out to a 61-57 lead in the second overtime but were unable to stave off Homewood down the stretch. Brewer finishes the season with a 29-5 record.
