Falkville Council voiced support for upgrading computer software in the town’s police department by adding a Law Enforcement Policy Manual and Daily Training Bulletin service, after discussing a proposal offered by Lexipol at a work session June 27.

Sgt. Aaron Burgess spoke to the proposal at length, pointing out it would keep the police department compliant with current state and federal laws and regulations.

“This is something we don’t currently have,” he said, “but we’d like to have it. It would reduce risk, avoid litigation and focus more resources on proactive policing.”

The software would cost $3,610 per year less an early adopter discount of $751, leaving a total of $2,859. Eight hours of training support are included.

Burgess reported that proceeds from the sale of a used police patrol car could be used to defray the initial cost since the item is not covered in the current fiscal budget.

The proposal was earmarked for consideration at the next council meeting. Other pending agenda items include the following:

•Annual park and recreation liability and accidental insurance at a cost of approximately $3,639

•Corporate sponsorship of a  “ Kick Cancer” Falkville High School football game at a cost of $350

•Renewal of a FHS cheerleading banner for $100

•Introduction of an amended Falkville Zoning Ordinance

•Registration and related expenses for SRO Seth Sullivan to attend a Law Enforcement Against Drugs training session in Tennessee

•Registration and related expenses for Police Chief Chris Free to attend a Police Chief’s Conference in Montgomery July 31-Aug. 3

The council also discussed the implementation of an approval process for employee training, disposal of a police patrol car that needs a rebuilt or replacement engine and participation in economic development seminars sponsored by NARCOG at Calhoun and Wallace State Community Colleges July 19-20.
