Due to a notice received from West Morgan East Lawrence Water Authority today, the water customers of the Town of Falkville have been urged not to drink or cook with the town’s water supply until noon on Friday, June 3.

The WMELWSA released a statement today recommending their customers not drink their water or use it for cooking until they can install an activated carbon system to remove the contaminants of PFOA and PFOS.

The Town of Falkville currently buys its water supply from Hartselle Utilities and West Morgan East Lawrence. The information below was sent out to Falkville water customers today.

Dear Water Customer:

A notice from West Morgan East Lawrence Water and Sewer Authority (the Board) was received by the Town of Falkville this afternoon, June 2, 2016. The Board, along with Hartselle Utilities, is a supplier of water to the Town for consumer use by Falkville Utilities customers. As you can see, due to unsafe levels of certain chemicals in the water provided by the Board, it is advised that humans do not drink or cook with the water until the problem is resolved.

The Town has taken immediate steps to suspend the purchase of water from the Board. Fortunately, the Town also purchases from Hartselle Utilities, which purchases it from Decatur Utilities. Because Decatur Utilities’ source of raw water is upstream from the sources of the chemical contamination in the Tennessee River, unlike The Board’s, which is downstream, no such unsafe levels are present in the water supplied by them as far as the Town has been able to ascertain and no advisories about the safety of the water are in effect at this time, nor are any expected. The changeover to Hartselle Utilities is being made immediately and the Town’s system will be flushed overnight tonight so as to make the water safe for drinking tomorrow, Friday, June 3, 2016. PLEASE DO NOT DRINK OR COOK WITH THE TOWN’S WATER UNTIL NOON ON FRIDAY, JUNE 3, 2016 TO BE SAFE.

The Town is doing everything within its power to remedy this situation and provide you with safe drinking water. We apologize for the inconvenience which this has caused.
