HHS seniors amass almost $4 million in scholarships

The largest class to come through Hartselle High School has received nearly $4 million in scholarships, according to HHS senior counselor Kenny Lopez.

Scholarship recipients were honored Thursday in the HHS auditorium. Representatives from many colleges, universities, clubs and organizations presented certificates to scholarship recipients in front of family and friends.

The class of 2015 has two National Merit Finalists, Molly Buffington and Robin Tumlinson, who were recognized as well. Buffington received the National Merit Finalists Scholarship, Presidential National Housing Scholarship and a Merit/ Academic Scholarship Stipend from the University of Alabama totaling $147,550. She was also named a United State Scholar nominee. Tumlinson was offered the National Scholars Presidential Merit Scholarship, National Scholars Presidential On-Camps Housing and Chemical Engineering Annual Scholarship from Auburn University, the Curtis Wright Sons and Daughters Scholarship from Curtis Wright and the Presidential Recognition Scholarship from the University of Alabama in Birmingham totaling $126,788. She plans to attend Auburn in the fall.

Students taking advantage of the newly established academies in the HHS curriculum were also recognized. They received chords correlating with their particular academy to wear at graduation. These students took classes from their respective academies all four years of high school. The academies represented this year will be Business and Marketing, Agriculture, Arts and Humanities and Medical. More academies will be set in place in the coming years.

Senior Seth Barbee has enlisted in the U.S. Air Force.

Several students received scholarships from local clubs and organizations. Local scholarship winners included Cody Long, Masonic Lodge; Aden Ward and Jonah Estrada, Youth Tour from Joe Wheeler; Sydnee Wiley, J.R. Knoff from Joe Wheeler; Cooper Wright, Electric Foundation from Joe Wheeler; Ali Kent and Lauren Allen, Ed Balch Memorial; Alex Ford and Katy Beth Bole, Hartselle Kiwanis Club; Nick Mitchell, Hartselle Rotary Club; Molly Kay Mayfield, Alabama Affordable Housing Association; Adam Allen, Briley Brown, Lawson Brown, Mason McGee and Preston Whitehead, NUCOR Steel Decatur; Ali Forth, Samantha Rogers, Marisa Holyoak, Starla Bunch and Alex Dobbins, Debra Briscoe Memorial; Cooper Wright, Community Urgent Care; Riley Corum, Hartselle Alumni Association; Katie Glasgow and Dustin Stephenson, Morgan County Cattlemen’s Association; Sydney Crow, Riley Corum, Ali Forth and Sydnee Wiley, Hartselle League Softball; Riley Corum, J.P. Cain Scholarship from Hartselle Athletic Boosters; Ali Forth, Lizzie Reid Penn Scholarship from Hartselle Athletic Boosters; Chase Barrett, Kelly Littrell Scholarship from Hartselle Athletic Boosters; Katy Beth Bole, Keith Wiggins Scholarship from Hartselle Athletic Boosters; Madison Williams, Kate Luckett Scholarship from Hartselle Athletic Boosters; Tate Mathis, Bob Gilchrist Scholarship from Hartselle Athletic Boosters and Stephanie Roman, Morgan County Minority Development.
