HCS releases top priorities

Meeting the educational needs of all students so that they can succeed at the next level is the top priority for Hartselle City Schools, according to the results of a community survey.

Sabrina Buettner, HCS strategic plan internal facilitator, said the strategic plan committee sifted through the results of the more than 2,000 results of the survey. After analyzing the data, Buettner brought the top five priorities back to the Hartselle Board of Education at its regular meeting Feb. 17.

“These five priorities reflect the results from our survey,” Buettner said. “We will use these priorities to develop our strategic plan for our school system.”

The other top priorities are:

• The prudent use of resources to maximize positive student outcomes.

• Hiring and retaining high quality teachers and administrators who stay abreast of the latest educational approaches and technology.

• Keeping our students, teachers and administrators up-to-date with technology – hardware, software, applications and support.

• Developing an engaged community with parent involvement and assistance with student work and behavior in order to promote student success.

Buettner said those priorities will be used to develop the school system’s vision and mission statements along with goals.

“All of the goals will be definable and measurable,” Buettner said.

School Superintendent Dr. Vic Wilson said he wants to unveil the plan to the community before the school system approves it. A tentative date for the public meeting is March 19.

“We want the community to see it and get involved with what we want to do,” Wilson said.

In other business, the board:

• approved a field trip for the high school Future Business Leaders of America club members and business education students to tour the CNN studios and Turner Field in Atlanta, Ga., April 24.

• added Marlon Tapscott and Hope Wilkins to the substitute list.

• accepted the retirements of child nutrition worker Vickie Sharp effective March 31 and psychometrist Wilsolene V. Cadman effective Sept. 1.

• approved the resignation of Anna Marie Perrin as assistant track and field coach.

• approved Keith Wright as a volunteer coach for baseball.
