Hartselle High School freshman boys (14-4) and JV girls (19-5) captured championship honors at the Morgan County Basketball Tournament at Tom Drake Gym in Falkville Saturday.

The freshmen Tigers boys had three players score in double figures as they opened the final round with a 67-40 win over Brewer (7-9).

Hartselle’s JV girls edged Danville 30-29 in a hard fought battle that wasn’t decided until the final seconds.

In the freshman game, Hartselle was up 11-8 after one quarter, led 40-18 at halftime and had the contest under wraps with a 55-49 advantage after three quarters.

Trace Hill paced the win with 19 points. Levin Lanier followed with 12 points; Houston Wright added 10 points and Ethan Ellis scored 6 points.

Brewer’s Preston Bryant led his team in scoring with 9 points and Tyler Peck followed with 6 points

“This team has some good shooters and they feed off the defense,” said head coach Tim Miller. “Our defensive effort was good especially in the first half. I’m proud of them. They did what they needed to do to win.

“I told them after the game if they continue to work hard, they can expect big things down the road,” he added.

The JV girls final was decided with 13.9 seconds left when Hartselle’s Billie Shelton sank a 12-foot jumper.

The score was tied 6-all after the first period. Hartselle was up 14-8 at halftime and Scarlett Shipley knotted the score at 24-all with a three-pointer at the buzzer as the third quarter ended.

Gracie Poe led Hartselle in scoring with 6 points. Kaitlyn Spangler, Maggie Anderson and McKenzie Worley each had 4 points.

Shipley led Danville (14-4) in scoring with 12 points. Brianna Downs added 9 points and Shelby Ziegler had 4 points.

“I’m extremely proud of these girls,” said head coach James Garner. “They have worked extremely hard since last summer and good things happen when you work hard. They played hard and deserved to win.”
