Hartselle School Superintendent Dr. Vic Wilson has wanted the school system to have a comprehensive strategic plan since his first day on the job in 2013.

By the spring of 2015, that plan will be implemented.

“My hope is that 20 years down the road the school system will continue to base the future on the strategic plan that we’re developing,” Wilson said. “It’s going to contain many objectives that we’re already doing and then include other ideas that will come from our community input.”

Wilson said the strategic plan committee would be analyzing the data compiled from the over 2,000 surveys that were completed over the last two months will be analyzed in January.

“We want the plan to be flexible enough to be able to change as our school system grows,” Wilson said.

One thing that Wilson is especially excited about is the collaboration between the three school systems in the county.

“I have a great working relationship with both (Morgan County Superintendent) Bill Hopkins and (Decatur Superintendent) Ed Nichols,” Wilson said. “We have seen that with our welding program… We want to continue to work together to get pre-k fully funded in all of our school districts.”

Wilson also said the school districts will be working with State Reps. Ed Henry, Terri Collins, Randall Shedd, Ken Johnson and Mickey Hammon and State Sen. Arthur Orr to help get a fully funded education budget.

“Dr. (Tommy) Bice has presented a good budget,” Wilson said. “We hope that the state legislature will help us and pass that budget.”

One other prediction that Wilson sees is the expansion of the IMPACT Hartselle program.

“One thing that gets overlooked in education is the value of physical education,” Wilson said. “When kids are healthy, they perform better in the classroom. I think we’re going to see the IMPACT Hartselle program improve and expand.”
