PES Student Council collects food for needy

Priceville Elementary School students donated 600 cans of non-perishable canned food for needy families in response to a food drive co-sponsored by Channel 48 and Morgan County Volunteer Center.

The project was conducted locally under the supervision of 21 Student Council representative and their co-sponsors, Kim Smith and Brianna Brown.

Student Council members loaded the food on a school bus Tuesday morning and carried it to Decatur Mall. They also joined with other students to sort, bag and get the food ready for distribution to needy families throughout Morgan County. Some of the food will be distributed to needy families at the Falkville Lions Club Christmas project Sat., Dec. 20.

“The students worked so hard and did such a good job,” said Student Council co-sponsor Kim Smith. “We talked to them about how the cans of food are going to be used to feed needy families and encouraged them to think about Christmas as a time of giving.”

Fifth grade students who collected 10 or more cans received a free homework pass. The 21 Student Council members stopped at Burger King in Priceville and ate a hamburger before returning to school.

Smith said the Student Council plans to make Christmas ornaments and write letters to military personnel serving in Afghanistan. They will be mailed next week.
