FLORETTE – Brewer went on a 10-0 run in the final two minutes of the game to defeat Hartselle 58-50 Friday night.

The Tigers’ Casen Wallace hit a 3-pointer late in the game to cut Brewer’s advantage to 47-46, but Patriot head coach Doug Oldacre said his players stepped up down the stretch to ice the game.

“Our energy was the difference in this game,” Oldacre said. “We played with a lot of energy all night. It led to some miscues on offense, but our guys played hard all night long. Aaron McDougal and DeSean Walker stepped up and made some shots after they cut it to one point.

“We’ve got a lot of young kids and this should give us some confidence.”

Hartselle head coach Faron Key, who coached his first game Friday night, said his team got rattled going down the stretch, especially when leading scorer Dolan Golden fouled out just after the Tigers cut the lead to one point.

“We – players and coaches – lost our composure when a couple of calls didn’t go our way,” Key said. “Defensively, our effort was great. They didn’t score many points against our set defense. Most of their points came on scramble situations. We forced a lot of turnovers, but we weren’t able to do much with them.”

Hartselle got out to a quick start, leading 10-5 late in the first quarter. Brewer answered by going on a 14-0 run to take a 19-10 lead midway through the second quarter.

The Tigers answered with a 12-2 run of its own to tie the game at 22. From there, the Patriots closed the first half on a 7-0 run to lead 29-22 at halftime.

Hartselle tied the game once again with a 10-3 run through most of the third quarter. Brewer still managed a 37-35 lead at the end of the third quarter.

The two teams would trade blows throughout the fourth quarter until Brewer broke the game open with its game-clinching run.

McDougal paced the Patriots with 13 points followed by Brenden Deberry with 10, Riley Hall with 9, Austin Crouch with 7, DeSean Walker with 7, John Jay Graves with 7 and Colton Bramlett and Chandler Brown with 2 each.

Golden led the Tigers with 13 points followed by Casen Wallace with 11, Isaac Taylor with 10, Jaylan Jackson with 9, Kylar Topps with 5 and Tobias Mitchell with 2.

The Tigers will play in the Holly Pond Thanksgiving Classic this week while Brewer is finishing up the Boaz Thanksgiving Tournament today.

Brook Childers paced Brewer with 18 points to power the Patriots against Hartselle.

Brewer led 8-3 at the end of the first quarter.

Hartselle answered thanks to Anna Mathis. She scored 6 of her 8 points during a 9-3 Hartselle run to take a 12-10 lead in the second quarter.

Childers hit a 3-pointer late in the first half that allowed Brewer to maintain a 21-18 lead at the half, despite Hartselle’s Riley Terry hitting a shot at the buzzer.

The Lady Tigers would never lead again, as Brewer pushed the game out of reach.
