Fred’s in Hartselle to close Jan. 1

Fred’s Super Dollar is planning to close its Hartselle store Jan. 1, 2015.

Michael Baker, a manager for the Hartselle store, confirmed the closing today. Calls to Fred’s corporate offices were not immediately returned on Wednesday.

Baker said he didn’t know the reason why the store was closing. However, the retail chain issued a press release Aug. 28 stating that it would close 60 stores that “have no pharmacies and do not meet operational performance targets.”

The Hartselle store does not have a pharmacy.

“All of the employees at this store will have to look for new jobs,” Baker said. “Normally, they might try to find jobs at nearby stores, but the Decatur store (the nearest Fred’s) is already full.”

Mayor Don Hall said he had not yet been contacted about the store closure by the retail chain but saw that someone had posted it on Facebook.

“You always hate to see any business close,” Hall said. “It sounds like the department chain had fallen on hard times and felt the need to close the store. I feel for those employees who have to find a new job now.”

In August, Fred’s reported a $16.4 million net loss for the second quarter and a net loss of $10.3 million for the first half of the fiscal year.

To help reverse that trend, the company planned to close the 60 stores, eliminate low-productive inventory, improve productivity, remove costs associated with excessive inventory, expanded general merchandise product sourcing capabilities and transitioned to a new pharmacy prime vendor agreement with Cardinal Health.
