A time to honor our heroes

In the first couple weeks of November, we spend our time thanking our veterans for the service that they have give to their country.

Hartselle and Morgan County take Veterans Day celebrations seriously. A week before Veterans Day, local schools and civic organizations begin the long list of veterans day celebrations.

Probably one of the finest events takes place at Hartselle Junior High School. It will be Nov. 6 at 10 a.m. in the Pettey Center. Veterans may arrive at 9:30 a.m. and park in the Pettey Center parking lot. Master of Ceremonies this year is John Frank Parker.

The Hartselle Veterans Parade will be Nov. 8 beginning at 9 a.m. followed by a brief program honoring our veterans and active servicemen and servicewomen.

Then any veteran present can either walk or ride in the parade through downtown Hartselle. This will give the chance for local residents to show their support for our active and discharged members of the military. The parade begins at 11 a.m.

Local churches usually also take the time to honor our veterans again.

There are other events at schools, almost too numerous to list. Please check our Community Calendar for more events.

If you have the opportunity to attend any of these events, I encourage you to participate in them.

If you cannot, then just find a veteran or family who lost a loved one in battle and thank them for their sacrifices for our great country.

Brent Maze is the managing editor of the Hartselle Enquirer.
