Ice buckets everywhere

It doesn’t matter where you’ve looked over the last few weeks- TV, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or at your local football game- people have been dumping ice water on themselves for Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Mayor Don Hall has done it. Superintendent Dr. Vic Wilson has done it. Just about all of Brewer High School has done it.

Ethel Kennedy even challenged President Obama to do it. Obama chose to donate over getting cold water dumped over his head.

However former President George W. Bush did get it and chose to donate so his wife, Laura doesn’t have to do it.

I can’t say that I’ve ever seen anything like this before. Maybe the only thing that has come close was the Lebroning craze back during the NBA Finals, but this has gone to a new level.

Some have compared this fundraiser for ALS as a ponzi scheme. That person was right, but it is for a good cause.

It’s been a fun way to bring awareness and donations to ALS. I’ve been challenged to do it. I haven’t decided whether I’ll do it formally or not.

However, I did kind of take the challenge along with the group that was challenged by the Les Amies sorority. One of the buckets got me during the melee at halftime of Friday’s football game.

But the greatest story came out of Brewer, where junior Hannah Bazzel challenged the entire school Tuesday after accepting the challenge herself.

Bazzel’s father, Chris Bazzel, has ALS. He is no longer able to speak, so he uses a iPad or Tobii technology to communicate. He also took the challenge himself last week.

My hope is that the challenge will help bring a cure for ALS. If it happens, then all of the cold showers were worth it.
