He’s got my back

Last week Lynn and I took off for a few days and went to the Smokey Mountains for a long weekend getaway. We usually try and do this at least once per year, normally in May for our anniversary. However, this year May just did not work out, and last weekend the stars lined up and we were able to go.

Living in today’s world, most of us know that we never really get away from the responsibilities that we leave behind at home. Whether this is work, church, family or even our volunteer activities, we actually never fully detach from all of our responsibilities. While this is great in many ways, it also means you cannot escape issues or other things that are happening while you are away.

Along with the knowledge of what is happening miles away also comes the anxiety and worry about what you should be doing to handle some of the situations that need your attention. There also can be periods of anxiousness about things that occurred before you left, leaving you thinking about what action you will need to take upon your return.

Last Thursday night, after arriving at our destination, I was having trouble falling asleep thinking about a big project at the paper. I could not quit thinking about how I was going to handle the consequences if the project did not finish well. I also had made a decision to make a change that affected one of the boards I serve on that might prove to be unpopular. I will admit these were not earth shattering or life altering issues, but they were issues that were important to me and issues that I needed resolved in a positive way.

After lying there tossing and turning and growing more anxious and wide awake, I thought I just needed to pray and let God take away the worry and anxiety I was having. The following verse has become very special to me, as well as helping me move on and lose the worry and stress over many situations.

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” Philippians 4:6 (NIV)

About five minutes later I was sound asleep and was able to enjoy the rest of our time away. Now God may not always provide the answer we think we need or want, but without a doubt, He is always there for me, gladly bearing my burden and without a doubt in my mind, He always has my back. He will do the same for you.

FYI-The work situation worked out great, still waiting on the other.
