Cinderella comes to HFAC

Cinderella-0222Amanda Johnson loves being Cinderella.

She has embraced playing the role in College Street Players’ production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s  “Cinderella” this week.

“When I enter a room dressed as Cinderella, I always get a hug from someone,” Johnson said. “I think they just love Cinderella and are very inspired by her, just as I am. I love playing the role of Cinderella.”

Fans of Cinderella can catch the Broadway-style fairy tale at the Hartselle Fine Arts Center Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. each night. There will also be two matinee performances at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students and seniors. Tickets are available at the HFAC or at the door as long as they last.

Jenny Faulk, choreographer and one of the show’s directors, said this production is different from many past, since it includes more adults in leading roles.

“We have actors from second grade to adults with varying degrees of experience and skill,” Faulk said. “We have a lot of adults in this one, which is a change, but we are doing the full Broadway version of ‘Cinderella.’ We needed adults in the lead roles of this production.”

Faulk said the cast of 76 has been practicing three days a week for eight weeks for the five 90-minute performances.

The centerpiece of the production is the Cinderella carriage, which came to life with the design of crew. It features LED lighting that can change colors, adding a little magic to the production.

Johnson said this is her first production with College Street Players and her first lead role in a production.

“The cast has been really helpful and really supportive of me,” Johnson said. “They’ve done a great job of making me feel comfortable.

“I’m a little bit sad that we’ll be done with everything next week,” Johnson added. “We have a great cast.”
