City decides not to reduce limits

The Hartselle City Council decided not to reduce its city limits to reflect the new property lines of parcels along the corporate limit lines.

While City Planner Jeremy Griffith described the change in the city limits line as a housekeeping issue, city council members didn’t want to set the wrong pattern for the future.

“We don’t want it to set a bad precedent for reducing the city limits,” said Council President Bill Smelser.

Councilman Kenny Thompson said the council has received requests in the past from disgruntled residents requesting to be de-annexed from the city. The city has usually denied those requests.

The recommendation to reduce the city limits was approved 6-0 by the Hartselle Planning Commission, but City Attorney Larry Madison said the city could choose to follow that recommendation or make its own decision.

In other business, the council:

• renewed its franchise agreement with Charter Communication.

• transferred the airport hangar lease agreement from Vision Flight Leasing, LLC to William Alston Powell.

• approved an application for education grant at the William Bradford Huie Library.

• changed the job description for equipment operator to include hiring a driver with a Class B license. The driver would have six months to obtain a Class A license.

• approved special events permits for the Cotton Pickin’ BBQ Cook-Off, Depot Days and Christmas Open House from the Hartselle Area Chamber of Commerce.

• made City Clerk Rita Lee the purchasing agent for the landscaping grant.

• discussed make its temporary sales tax ordinance to stronger to eliminate problems with sales tax payment and restrict where temporary sales can occur.
