Massey and Falkville firefighters extinguish hot spots in a barn fire in the Massey community on Thursday morning.

A fire of unknown origin destroyed a barn and its contents on the Jim and Dotie Gabaree farm in the Massey community Thursday morning.

Falkville and Massey Volunteer Fire Departments responded to the blaze at 8:11 a.m., according to Falkville Fire Chief Chris Free.

“The first person on the scene reported the barn was fully involved in flames upon arrival,” Free said. “A stiff wind from the south and rolls of hay inside made it difficult it handle.”

In addition to rolls of hay, a farm tractor and a motorcycle were destroyed in the fire. Mrs. Gabaree said the fire was reported to her at work and she called to her son, Samuel Wilhite, to let him know what was happening.

He was sleeping in their home at 3786 Nanceford Road about 50 yards behind their home.

Massey Volunteer Fire Department was the first responder to the fire with Falkville assisting. Combined, they used three fire engines and an estimated 15 firefighters.

They were still fighting hot spots in the barn at 9:15 a.m.
