HHS runners make progress

Hartselle High School’s cross country runners showed good progress against some of the best runners in the state as they competed in the Scottsboro Invitational on Saturday.

Senior Aaron Davis logged the best performance with a 16th place finish in a field of 307 runners in the boy’s Class 5A-6A division. His time was 17:27.07.

His sister, sophomore Abigail Davis, posted a personal best time of 20:56.36 in the girl’s division, finishing in 26th place. She competed against 228 runners.

Two members of the boy’s team also logged personal best times. John Paulsen ran a 17:35.65 time and finished 48th while Chase Barrett logged a time of 18:10.77 and came in at 61st.

Johnathan Duncan, who sat out in 2012, showed remarkable improvement from his previous competition by shaving 2.5 minutes off his time. He was the 25th runner to finish with a time of 17.35.65.

Reagan Bowling finished behind Davis with a 91st finish in the girl’s division with a time of 23:14.69. Morgan Ward came in 89th with a time of 23.14.10 while Mallory Faulkner, coming back after surgery, finished 127th with a time of 24:37.94.

Hartselle’s boys finished eighth overall while the girls came in 12th.

“The weather was perfect and our times were better than they were the previous week,” said head coach Kenny Lopez. “I am encouraged. We’re running against some of the best athletes in the state and that’s where I want us to be at this stage of the season.”

The team doesn’t have an event scheduled this weekend.
