FLORETTE – The Brewer Patriots (1-2, 1-1) lacked enough offensive production to keep pace with the Etowah Blue Devils (3-0, 2-0), who cruised to a 37-7 win Friday night.

Martin Ruiz Jr. stepped in and made big plays while senior Devin Horton rested a broken arm and managed to score twice with 234 yards on 10 carries.

Etowah took control early, forcing a three-and-out and scoring on a 73-yard drive that set the tone for the rest of the game.

Later, Ruiz picked up a fumbled snap and took it 86 yards to the house up the middle for the Blue Devils’ second score.

Brendon Deberry got Brewer on the scoreboard with a 60-yard punt return for the score. The Patriots closed the gap to 14-7 early in the second quarter.

Brewer had their chances in the second quarter, starting two drives inside the Blue Devils’ 25-yard line. The Patriots came up short on fourth down each time.

Etowah faked a 30-yard field goal and turned it into six points on a Kaleb Nelms pass.

The Blue Devils led 20-7 at halftime and flexed their muscles again early in the third quarter on a touchdown by Stacy Williams.

A painted picture of three-and-outs continued to be on display for the Patriots.

Jose Megadragon Jr. added a field goal with a short field-goal attempt.

Ruiz’s he spun his way into the end zone from five yards out for the final score of the night.

Brewer travels to Arab Friday in region play.
