VINEMONT – Vinemont scored 20 unanswered points in the second half to put away Danville 32-7 in the region opener Friday night.

Following a season opening loss at Randolph, the Danville Hawks spent the week working on becoming a more physical football team on both sides of the ball.

For two and a half quarters last Friday night against Vinemont, it looked as if that practice had paid off.

Hawk senior quarterback Dallas McAbee scored on a four-yard run. Noah Hogan added the extra point. With 7:07 left in the third quarter, the Hawks had cut Vinemont’s lead to 12-7.

Unfortunately for Danville, that would be their only score as the rest of the night belonged to another bird of prey, the Eagles of Vinemont.

Vinemont would score on its next three possessions, driving 59 yards, 72 yards and 31 yards respectively.

Taylor Evans scored on an 8-yard run to give the Eagles a 20-7 lead. Evans had scored on a 78 yard run in the 1st half to put Vinemont up 12-0.

John Michael Dyer also scored two touchdowns on runs of five yards and one yard. His second touchdown made the score 26-7 in favor of the Eagles early in the fourth period.

Trey Guthery got the final Eagle touchdown of the night to make the final score 32-7.

Danville (0-2, 0-1) will travel to Winfield Friday night for another Class 3A, Region 7 contest. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
