Hartselle’s 8U Black All-Stars finished as the runner-up team in their division of the 2013 USSSA Softball World Series in Alfreda, Ga. on Saturday after battling back and winning four straight games in the loser’s bracket.

The team lost 14-11 to Sharon Springs, Ga. after leading in the early innings.

“Our girls played well but their team had some key hits late in the game and was able to pull it out,” said coach Jason Preiutt. “Playing five straight games in the loser’s bracket took its toll and we were worn out at the end.”

“Overall, they fought hard every game and refused to quit.” he added “We’re very proud of them.”

Hartselle went 2-1 in pool play before losing its second game in the tournament and dropping into the loser’s bracket. They went on to win four straight games before losing in the championship battle. Overall, they and a 10-3 record in the tournament and a 30-6 record in post season play.

Hartselle’s Karsi Lentz was honored as Offensive Player of the Tournament. She was also named to the All-Tournament Team along with teammates Larissa Preuitt, Kaelyn Jones and Kiera Stutts.

The awards were voted by coaches of all 15 teams in 8U competition.

Other Hartselle team members are Alyssa McMinemon. Breanna Sengstacke, Catherine Keel, Lydia Firpo, Angel Dowdy, Sage Patrick, Alanna Evans and Brantley Drake. Other coaches are Kristy Jones, Shaun Jones and Brad Drake.
