Shady Grove Church to host young women’s brunch

Shady Grove Baptist Church will host a young women’s brunch Sat., July 13, at 9 a.m. for high school, college and career. The speaker will be Amy George. The program topic will be “To All the Women: A Living Worthy of My Life.”

McKendree United Methodist Church youth enjoyed spending June 29 and 30 at the home of Tom and Tina Summerford at Smith Lake. Youth leaders Kevin and Stephanie Crawley and other volunteers helped with food and events for the youth and their guests.

Shady Grove Baptist Church vacation Bible school, Colossal Coaster World had an enrollment of 36 children and an average attendance of 28 children, plus almost 40 leaders and helpers. The offering was $368. The funds will be used by the youth group to conduct projects in the community.

Round Top Community Church and McKendree United Methodist Church choirs participated in the Fifth Sunday Singspiration on June 30 at Victory Fellowship Church in Falkville. After the church groups sang, everyone enjoyed refreshments in the fellowship hall. The next Fifth Sunday Singspiration will be on Sept. 29 at 6 p.m.. The host church will be announced later.

Members of Shady Grove Baptist Church remembered the late Wesley Garrison, June 11, 1941, to May 31, 2013, on the occasion of his birthday.

On Sun., June 30, Falkville Public Library Board hosted a dedication service for a memorial bench in memory of Vernon Ayre Sr. Librarian Jenny Asherbranner welcomed the Ayre family and others attending. Mayor Bob Ramey gave the invocation. Vernon Ayre Jr. spoke about his father’s interests in reading and travel and his legacy to his family and others of always seeking knowledge. Board chairwoman, Rhona Summerford dedicated the bench and plaque and spoke of Vernon’s support of the library through the years. Thirty-four people attended and enjoyed refreshments in the library meeting room. They also enjoyed touring the library. Two travel books about Germany were donated in memory of Ayre and were on display. Vernon had special interests in Germany. He and his wife, Margaret, had lived there for two years.

Falkville Library Board members and patrons are especially grateful to Vernon for his influence and encouragement in getting computers for the library. They also appreciated Vernon Jr.’s continued help with computers.

Happy birthday wishes go out this week to Hattie Mae Hardin, formerly of Massey and now at Summerford Nursing Home. Hattie Mae will celebrate her 95th birthday on Sat., July 13. Congratulations Hattie Mae and God bless you!

Belated happy birthday wishes go out this week to Colton Spinks on July 2, Preston Byrd on July 3, Katy Sparkman and Kaitlin Faulkner, both on July 4, Jenna Locklear on July 8, Connor Boyd on July 10, Louis Depreast, Dustin Crow and Tim Roden, all on July 11, John Locklear on July 13 and Tony Turrentine and Tran Griffin, both July 14.

Falkville United Methodist Church and Gandy’s Cove United Methodist Church had guest speaker Kay West from Trinity United Methodist Church in Huntsville Sun., June 30. She is president of the N.E. District United Methodist Women. Gandy’s Cove was observing United Methodist Women’s Sunday. Falkville United Methodist Church doesn’t have a women’s group at this time. Kay West encouraged them to organize again. She gave a history of the Women’s Society of Christian Service and told of projects of the United Methodist Women, local, national and worldwide today. The vision of the organization is to turn faith, hope and love into action on behalf of women, children and youth around the world. Dr. John Russell is the pastor at both Gandy’s Cove and Falkville churches.

Belated happy wedding anniversary wishes go out this week to Bobby and Debbie White. They observed their 15th wedding anniversary Sun., July 7.

Happy wedding anniversary wishes go out to Rassie and Avis Wallace who will celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary Sat., July 13, and Brian and Amber Pendleton who will observe their fifth wedding anniversary Sun., July 14.

Falkville United Methodist Church had a fellowship lunch after the morning worship service, Sun., July 7. Jo Wilson, Susan Smith, Ann Vest, Jean McCaig and Debbie Higginbotham were among those ladies in charge of the food.
