Burks wins four events at Huntsville Invitational

Quanesha Burks placed first in four events and led the way for Hartselle High School’s track and field team to finish seventh overall among 22 teams competing at the fifth annual Huntsville Panther Invitational on Saturday.

The girls team came in fourth while the boys team finished 14th.

Burks was first in the 100 and 200-meter dashes with times of 12.11 and 25.94, respectively. She also came in first in the long jump with a distance of 18-05 and won the triple jump with a distance of 38-09.

“We are still a young team fighting to compete on the same level with the strongest teams in North Alabama, “ said Hartselle head coach Kenny Lopez. “But we’re getting better, striving each day to improve out times and distances.”

Other top 10 finishers in the girls division were: Billie Shelton, eighth in the 100-meter hurdles and sixth in the 300-meter hurdles; Megan Zuck, eighth in the triple jump; Kaeli Gerstman, 10th in the shot put; and Savannah Holmes, fifth in the javelin throw.

In addition, the team of Taylor Barnett, Reagan Bowling, Abigail Davis and Jessica Hickerson came in fourth in the 4×800 relay.

Top 10 finishers in the boys division were: Hunter Grantland, seventh in the 100-meter dash and eighth in the 200-meter dash; Mason McGee, second in the 110-meter hurdles and ninth in the 300-meter hurdles; and James Glenn, 10th in the shot put and sixth in the discus throw.

The 4×800 relay team came in fourth. It consisted of Chase Barrett, Aaron Davis, Jonathan Duncan and John Paulsen.
