Hartselle baseball off to 3-1 start

The 2013 Hartselle baseball is off to a 3-1 start during the Birmingham-Huntsville tournament this week.

The Tigers will play again on Friday against Buckhorn and Oak Mountian, who is hosting both games at 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.

Spain Park 4, Hartselle 3 (8)

A leadoff walk in the top of the eighth inning doomed the Tigers. After a pitching change, the Jaguars were able to get the runner home.

Spain Park got on the board, scoring three runs in the top of the fourth inning.

Hartselle cut the lead to 3-2 in the fifth inning and then tied the game on a Blackwood RBI single in the seventh inning that scored Deacon Aldridge. All of Hartselle’s seventh-inning base runners came with two outs.

AJ Owens took the loss despite not giving up a hit in three innings of work. However, Owens did have three walks.

Jake Whitt got the start and gave up three earned runs on four hits with a strikeout.

Blackwood, Aldridge and Easton Chenault all went 2-for-4 for the game. Tyler Phillips, Tanner Oakes and Daniel Conley all had hits, with Oakes and Conley scoring runs.

Hartselle 6, Hazel Green 4 (9)

Deacon Aldridge led the hitting with four hits and two RBIs. He also earned the win in relief of pitchers Tillman Landers and Griffen Steelman.

Easton Chenault, Chris Brown and Zane Hamlett also added doubles. Chenault and Tyler Phillips also had RBIs. Daniel Conley and Aaron Lamb each had two stolen bases each while Phillips had one stolen base.

Hartselle 7, Hoover 6 (9)

Brett Blackwood went 3-for-5 with a run scored while Tyler Phillips was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs. Daniel Conley also had two hits.

Deacon Aldridge, Chris Brown, Tanner Oakes, Zane Hamlett, Blake Slayton and Aaron Lamb all collected hits for Hartselle. Aldridge, Hamlett, Slayton and Lamb all scored runs.

Starter Brady Wallace went five innings, allowing four earned runs on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Levi Tapscott earned the win in four innings of work. He allowed two hits and no earned runs with a strikeout and a walk.

Hartselle 13, Buckhorn 1 (6)

Hartselle scored their 13 runs on 13 hits. Easton Chenault and Brett Blackwood each had two hits while Tyler Phillips had three RBIs.

Chenault, Chris Brown, Daniel Conley, Zane Hamlett and AJ Owens each had two RBIs. Brown’s RBIs came on a home run while AJ Owens had a double. Phillips, Conley and Owens all had stolen bases.

Dakota Fowler had three strikeouts in four innings pitched to get the win.
