Three people were transported to Decatur Morgan Hospital Tuesday morning after their pickup truck and a SUV collided at the intersection of Sparkman and Chestnut streets in downtown Hartselle.

The driver of the pickup truck, Gene C. Blevins, 83, of Somerville and a female passenger, Deborah B. Writesel; 55, of Lacey’s Spring were trapped inside the overturned truck for about 30 minutes while Hartselle Fire and Rescue used metal cutting tools to free them.

The driver of the SUV was identified as Susan Tucker of Hartselle.

All three sustained injuries and were transported to Decatur Morgan Hospital by County EMS. The extent of their injuries were not known at press time.

The accident occurred at approximately 9:15 a.m. and quickly attracted a crowd of emergency responders and onlookers. Traffic was detoured around the accident scene for nearly an hour.

Firefighters used a cutting tool to remove the pickup’s windshield and top.

Hartselle police officers are investigating the crash.
