Karen Duke chosen as AASB Dist. 8 director

Karen Duke, president of the Decatur City Board of Education, was chosen recently to serve as District 8 director for the Alabama Association of School Boards (AASB). She was also honored for her selection as a 2012 All-State School Board Member.

The appointment was announced at the 2012 AASB Annual Annual Convention in Birmingham Dec. 6-8.

Duke is a member of AASB’s Masters Honor Roll. She has earned more than 270 academy hours since she joined the Decatur School Board in 2000. She advocates for Alabama’s schoolchildren through AASB’s Leader to Leader program and the Federal Relations Network. She has served on several AASB committees, including Academy Assessment and Budget and Finance.

As District 8 director, she will act as a liaison between the AASB Board of Directors and her district, providing information and leading district meetings. District 8 comprises the Athens, Cullman, Decatur, Florence, Haleyville, Hartselle, Muscle Shoals, Russellville, Sheffield and Tuscumbia school boards, as well as the Colbert, Cullman, Franklin, Lauderdale, Lawrence Limestone, Morgan and Winston county school boards.
