Qualifying begins for city election

Armstrong first to file papers
Qualifying of candidates for Hartselle mayor, city council and school board positions began today and will continue until 5 p.m. on Tues., July 17.
Jason Armstrong was the first person to file qualifying papers with City Clerk/Controller Rita Lee. He made a bid for election to Place 5 on the City Council shortly after 8 a.m.
The position is being left vacant by Don Hall who is an announced candidate for mayor.
Lee said she had appointments set up with six other candidates throughout the day.
Each candidate is required to fill out four forms as follows: Statement of Candidacy, Statement of Economic Interest, Appointment of Principal Campaign Committee and Campaign Finance Contribution and Expense. In addition, a $50 qualifying fee is required of each candidate.
Armstrong, 37, is a graduate of Hartselle High School and Wallace State Community College. He has several years of supervisory experience in retail business and is currently employed as a security guard at the former CR Compressors (Copeland) plant.
“I’m suggesting that candidates call ahead to make an appointment to qualify,” said Lee. “This saves them time and expedites the qualifying process.”
She said names of candidates and the positions they’re seeking would be posted at the end of the workday on a bulletin board inside the front entrance of the City Hall Auditorium.
