Jan. 25, 1957-The MCHS senior basketball team beat Decatur tonight but only barely.
The quintet had a big lead during much of the game but the Red Raiders almost pulled it out before the final buzzer sounded with Hartselle ahead 61-60. Higdon was high scorer for the Tigers with 17 points while Channell had 14.
Jan. 25, 1957-Coffee Day for the Hartselle division of the Morgan County March of Dimes was observed today. All places serving coffee gave their entire java proceeds to help polio victims.
Jan. 26, 1957-John (Bud) Mayfield has been inducted into the “J” Club at Jax State after receiving his letter in basketball. The freshman is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. K. Mayfield and an MCHS graduate.
Jan. 27, 1957-Attorney Grady J. Long has moved his law office over the old city hall, the one-time First National Bank building, to the suite of rooms in the Booth building recently vacated by Dr. J. S. Martin. His long-time secretary, Italyne Hardwick, had worked for one or more attorneys at the old location for about 50 years.
Jan. 27, 1957-Police Chief Curtis Chaney has issued a warning to all traffic law violators that a crackdown on such things as speeding, running red lights, and failure to heed stop signs is on the way. Beginning today all those who violate city ordinances regarding traffic regulations will have to suffer the consequences.
Jan. 28, 1957-Hartselle Cub Scouts Pack No. 30 met tonight. Cubmaster Merrill Doss leads the group, currently numbering 55 members.
Jan. 29, 1957-Rufus Bodley and his 18-year-old son, Bobby, were struck by lightning during last night’s electrical storm. Bobby was rushed to the Hartselle Hospital where he is in fair condition. Mr. Bodley was knocked backwards about eight or ten feet by the lightning, but was not injured.
Jan. 30, 1957-The Grady Nicholson family has relocated from Walker County to Hartselle. Mr. Nicholson will be associated with his brother, Garvice, in the local Ford dealership.
Jan. 31, 1957-Enquirer columnist Dorothy Puckett joins the entire community in saying, “Congratulations and best wishes for success to our new head football coach, J. P. Cain-a really swell guy.”
