HHS band members earn honors

By Staff
Dexter Greenhaw, HHS Band Director
Each January, more than 1,200 students from District One (Morgan, Limestone, and Madison Counties) audition to become members of the Alabama All-State Band.
Hartselle High School band members selected for District One Honor Band are Justin Dobbs, Kirk Goodwin, and Sarah Paulos. A concert was held Feb. 21 and 22 at Huntsville High School showcasing these talented performers.
Each year, approximately 1,800 students from throughout the Southeast apply to The University of Alabama to be members of the Alabama Honors Band. Students are selected based on their placement and the quality of their high school band, along with their own musical achievements. HHS band members selected for Alabama Honors Band are Megan Bartlett, Ian Greenhaw, Justin Dobbs, Sarah Paulos, Kirk Goodwin, and Christa Ward.
District Band Festival was held at Decatur High School on Feb. 27-28. The Hartselle Concert Band received all superior ratings at district qualifying the band to perform at the Alabama Bandmaster's State Competition. The concert band performed at Samford University on March 19, where they received all superior ratings from the judges. The band also received a superior rating in the sight-reading division where bands are given a warm-up chorale and concert piece. Each band has seven minutes to prepare the piece and then perform for the judge, where they are scored on their ability to play the piece the way the composer intended.
A spring concert will be held May 13 at the Princess Theatre featuring junior high and beginning concert bands, high school jazz band, and concert bands.
A jazz concert will be held May 15 at Earth Park in Hartselle and May 19 at Rhodes Ferry Park in Decatur.
