Dads on Duty: Danville Neel Elementary School fathers step up for carline patrol

The carline at Danville-Neel Elementary School has become a smoother and more joyful experience for students and parents alike, thanks to a group of devoted fathers who have stepped up to help during morning drop-offs and afternoon pick-ups. Calling themselves “Dads on Duty,” these dedicated fathers have been making a remarkable impact on the school community.

Principal Tara Morrow praised the Dads on Duty, saying the initiative, which began as a simple idea from the school’s PTO, has grown into a heartwarming movement that is transforming the daily routines of students and parents at Danville Neel Elementary.

Every morning and afternoon, these fathers, many of whom are rec league coaches in the community and have full-time jobs, gather at the school’s entrance to assist with the carline process. Armed with smiles and high-fives, they ensure a smooth flow of traffic while brightening up the start and end of the school day for the students.

“I think the dads enjoy it just as much as the kids do,” Morrow said. “We had 14 dads the first week and 15-20 now. Our kids love it.”

The positive effects of the Dads on Duty initiative extend beyond just traffic management. Morrow said students have improved moods and are more excited about coming to school and have asked about having the dads back to the car line on a monthly basis.

“We thought it would just be a one-time thing but after seeing the great response and how well it was received, we want to keep having the dads back,” she said.

“Except for one or two men on our staff, we are primarily all females,” Morrow added. “So, seeing all the dads first thing in the morning is a big deal for our students.”
