Students visit Moon Logging in Hartselle

 Juniors and seniors from Falkville High School participated in a Forestry Field Day as part of Alabama Woods to Goods Week Oct. 17. The event included visiting Moon Logging’s operation in Hartselle and touring Littrell Lumber Mill in Decatur. 

While at the logging site, students got an up-close view of logging equipment and talked to Jerry 

Moon and his son Donavan, who own and operate Moon Logging, about the logging process, merchandising timber and what it takes to become a logger. 

Staff from the Forest Workforce Training Institute assisted with the event and spoke on career opportunities in the forestry industry. Darci DeBrunner and Robert Maddox from the Alabama Forestry Commission spoke to students about the function of the commission for the state and the importance of implementing “Best Management Practices” while timber harvesting. 

Students then toured Littrell Lumber Mill where they followed logs from the debarking process all the way to the finished products. 

Littrell Lumber Mill is a family owned and operated sawmill that has been in operation since 1931. Their products range from heart pine flooring to custom millwork. They pride themselves on selecting only grade logs in order to provide the highest quality finished product possible.  

Forestry Field Days are designed to expose high school students to the various careers in the forest industry that are available to them in their local communities by giving them the opportunity to interact with forest industry professionals in the workplace. They also aim to educate students on the sustainable nature of the forest and forest products industry. 

Alabama Woods to Goods Week is a week-long promotional event to celebrate forestry’s professionals, products and industry. This year’s celebration is sponsored by the Alabama Association of RC&D Councils.
