Hartselle’s 2014 5A State Championship softball team hosted their annual softball camp Monday and Tuesday at Grady and Margie Long Park under the direction of Head Coach Christy Ferguson.

Sixty-five girls started the day camp Monday morning. The camp ran from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. both days. Campers were divided into six age groups that rotated to different stations.

Thirteen of the players from the state championship team helped teach hitting, fielding, running and throwing techniques at the various stations. Instructors included Riley Corum, Madeline Sittason, Jada Hayes, Taylor Wascavage, Sydnee Wiley, Anna Stinson, Sis Hayes, Hope Cain, Ali Forth, Sydney Crow, Hannah Jenkins, Bailey Powell and Sarah Ellen Battles. Assistant coaches included Robin Riley and Anna Hall and Robert Slack.

The state championship tournament cut into the team’s usual advertising time to hand out fliers and remind everyone about the upcoming camp.

“The state championship helps bring people in, just like in 2003 when we won,” Ferguson said, “but it also kept us from advertising as much as we normally do. We still had a good turnout. Our numbers are up from last year.”

Ferguson said she felt the state title builds trust in the campers and parents.

“People start to really trust the Hartselle softball tradition when we get the big wins,” Ferguson said. “They trust that we know what how to play and be successful.”
