Lady Tigers advance to volleyball sub-state

Hartselle High School’s volleyball team captured championship honors in the Class 5A, Region D Volleyball Tournament at Alabama A&M University on Saturday and advanced to the sub-state round of competition.

By defeating Curry 25-16, 25-19,12-25, 25-16 in the region final the Lady Tigers became one of only 16 teams left standing in their division. They will host John Carroll in a best three of five set match on Thursday at 4 p.m. to determine which team moves on to the state’s final eight tournament.

To reach the regional finals, the Lady Tigers won over East Limestone 25-20, 25-12, 25-12, in the opening round and followed with a 25-19, 25-20, 25-21 win over Walker.

“We had good leadership from our seniors and everybody played well as a team,” said Hartselle head coach Tanya Lybarger. “Every member of the team is making hits and the level of confidence the players have in each other has gone up.”

Leading Hartselle in scoring for the three games was Olivia Golden with 42 kills, 26 digs, four aces and three blocks. Katelyn Hill followed with 24 kills, 26 digs, five aces and eight blocks. Kaylee Shelton had 21 kills,  five digs and eight blocks, Taylor Lybarger scored 15 kills, 23 digs, an ace and four blocks, Haley Jared had 10 j kills, two assists and seven blocks, Savanne Howard had 98 assists, 13 digs, three aces an six blocks, Elizabeth Russell had three assists, 12 digs and six aces, and Sarah Ellen Battles had an assist, 13 digs and three aces.

Brewer wins consolation over Walker, advances

Brewer’s Lady Patriots defeated Walker 31-29, 25-23, 25-19 in the consolation round to advance to sub-state play. The Lady Patriots will face Boaz on the road Thursday.

The Lady Patriots reached the consolation game by defeating Lee-Huntsville 25-20,m17-25,30-28,25-14 in the first round before losing to the same team 25-16, 26-24,19-25, 25-12 in the semifinal round.

Brewer was paced by Riley Northway who had 3-game total of 36 kills. Cheyenne McLemore and Savanna Flack followed with 27 kills each. Danielle Dunn led in assists with 59 while Reed Sowder followed with 43. Shelby Dolley had 42 digs and McLemore scored seven aces.
