Glasscock calling for recount

Morgan County Commission Chairman John Glasscock wants a recount of the votes  cast in the June 1 Republican Primary  for himself and three challengers.  He made his desire official on June 10 by filing a request with Clay Marlow, chairman of the Morgan County Republican Executive Committee.
The committee  is scheduled to meet and consider the request at a called meeting on Thursday. If it votes in the affirmative, a recount  could take place as early as the next day .
Glasscock  said he expected to receive a bigger vote in the election and decided to call for a recount  after many of his friends and supporters urged him to do so.
“Me and my supporters question that low number,” Glasscock said . “It could be the result of a glitch in the voting machines. Without a recount, we’d never know for sure.”
Glasscock  finished last in a four-candidate  race for the GOP nomination for chairman with 11 percent of the vote. District 3 commissioner Don Stisher finished third and  Somerville Mayor Ray Long and Revenue Commissioner Amanda Scott  finished second and first, respectively, and will  face each other in a July 13 runoff.
Morgan County Probate Judge Greg Cain said he and his staff would conduct the recount if one is requested by the Republican Party Executive Committee.  The cost is borne by the candidate requesting a recount and could be as much as $5,000.
“Every ballot has to be reprocessed,” Cain said. “It’s a time-consuming job.”
