Danville sweeps Hartselle, Muscle Shoals

Class 3A No. 6 Danville didn’t drop a set in a pair of wins against Class 5A No. 2 Hartselle and Muscle Shoals Thursday night.

The Lady Hawks (27-12) earned a hard-fought 25-21, 25-22 win over the Lady Tigers (30-13) in the nightcap.

Danville jumped out to a 15-8 lead in the first set before withstanding a late Hartselle surge.

Some of the calls line calls in the first set drew the ire of Hartselle coach Tanya Lybarger, a few of which she felt were incorrect. That caused the head referee to switch the positions of the line judges in the second set.

The Lady Hawks once again jumped out to an early 9-4 advantage. The Lady Tigers got within two points at 18-16, but could never pull ahead as Danville pulled away.

Danville also defeated Muscle Shoals 25-9, 25-23 in the first match of the day.

Sydni Shelton led the way with 30 kills, five blocks and 20 digs. Megan Luker added 17 kills, 11 digs and three blocks.

Setter Charlee Anderson had 52 assists and three aces followed by Kellee Stiles with 11 digs and Sloan Lindsey with a pair of aces.

Taylor Dellinger led Hartselle against Danville with nine kills, 12 digs, an ace and a block. Haley Jared had five kills and four digs.

Taylor Lybarger added three kills, nine digs and two assists. Melissa Paul Hill collected 22 assists and nine digs.

Haley Jared scored five kills and four digs while Tor Denslow had five kills and two digs. Sarah Ellen Battles had seven digs followed by Tori Miller with an assist and Katy Beth Bole with a kill and a dig.

In the Hartselle vs. Muscle Shoals match, it looked like Hartselle would run away with it early, easily taking the first set 25-8. The Lady Trojans scored the last four points to take the second set 25-21, evening the match.

Dellinger’s hitting and serving helped Hartselle gain an 8-2 advantage in the third set and Hartselle held on to win 15-9.

Jared paced the Lady Tigers against Muscle Shoals by scoring 12 kills, 11 digs and an ace. Dellinger followed with 10 kills, 11 digs, two aces and an assist. Lybarger had nine kills, five digs, an assist and a block.

Hill had 32 assists, three kills, four digs and an ace while Sarah Ellen Battles added 12 digs and two assists.

Bole also had two kills, four blocks and a dig and Tori Denslow scored two blocks and a kill.
